Habits
Singly, in pairs or small groups, usually observed roosting during the day.
Food
Mainly large nocturnal insects. Occasionally annelids, molluscs and crustaceans, and also small vertebrates.
Voice
A resonant, low, pulsating 'oom-oom-oom-oom', slow or rapid. Also grunts, and drums when alarmed. Young utter cat-like sounds and growls.

Breeding Season (Guide)
August - December, but after rain inland.
Nest
An open platform of fine sticks and twigs loosely put together, often lined with green leaves, usually placed on a horizontal fork up to 15 m above the ground.
Eggs (Guide)
1 - 3, usually 2; pure white; ellipsoidal; 40 - 50 x 30 - 35 mm in southeast to 35 - 45 x 25 - 33 mm in north. Incubation: 28 - 32 days; by both sexes. Eggs are laid at one - three night intervals.
Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in 25 - 35 days.
Subspecies
The following subspecies are recognised:
- Podargus strigoides strigoides - mainland Australia, east and south of the Great Divide from the Burdekin River to south-eastern SA and Tasmania.
- Podargus strigoides brachypterus - Australia, west of the Great Divide and south of about 10° S.
- Podargus strigoides phalaenoides - tropical Australia, north of about 20° S.
- Podargus strigoides lilae - Groote Eylandt, NT.
Similar Species
In Qld and north-eastern NSW with Marbled Frogmouth (Podargus ocellatus) and in north-eastern Qld with Papuan Frogmouth (Podargus papuensis).
