Subspecies
Proposed subspecies lilae (Groote Eylandt) and gouldi (north-eastern Australia) included in phalaenoides, while cornwalli (eastern Queensland), victoriae (south-central Australia) and cuvieri (Tasmania) all now lumped into nominate. Much of the variation now known to be clinal, resulting in various recent treatments reducing number of valid subspecies to five, three, two or none, but detailed studies now indicate three should be accepted.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
strigoides (Latham, 1801) - Mainland Australia, east and south of the Great Divide from the Burdekin River to south-eastern SA and Tasmania.
brachypterus Gould, 1841 - Western Australia (north to Great Sandy Desert) north-east to Channel Country of Queensland and south-east to Murray mallee in Victoria.
phalaenoides Gould, 1840 - Throughout northern Australia, south to Great Sandy Desert, Barkly Tableland and southern plains of Gulf of Carpenteria in Queensland.
Similar Species
In Qld and north-eastern NSW with Marbled Frogmouth (Podargus ocellatus) and in north-eastern Qld with Papuan Frogmouth (Podargus papuensis).
