Subspecies
Relationships unclear. Proposed treatments as member of species-group that includes Southern Boobook (Ninox boobook), Morepork (Ninox novaeseelandiae), Seram Boobook (Ninox squamipila), Manus Boobook (Ninox meeki), Jungle Boobook (Ninox theomacha) and perhaps other boobooks in Australasian Region.. Sometimes referred to, erroneously, as Ninox solomonis. New Hanover population sometimes separated as superior.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

superior Hartert, 1925 - New Hanover (Bismarck Archipelago).
variegata (Quoy & Gaimard, 1830) - Bismarck Archipelago.
