Subspecies
Relationships uncertain. Proposed treatments as member of species-group that includes Southern Boobook (Ninox boobook), Morepork (Ninox novaeseelandiae), Seram Boobook (Ninox squamipila), Manus Boobook (Ninox meeki), Bismarck Boobook (Ninox variegata) and perhaps other boobooks in Australasian Region.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

hoedtii (Bonaparte, 1855) - Waigeo and Misool Is.
theomacha (Bonaparte, 1855) - New Guinea.
goldii Gurney Sr, 1883 - D'Entrecasteaux Archipelago (Goodenough, Fergusson, Normanby).
rosseliana Tristram, 1889 - Louisiade Archipelago (Tagula, Rossel).
