Subspecies
Considered to form superspecies with, or even be conspecific with, Blakiston's Eagle-Owl (Bubo blakistoni), but skeletal details, especially skull osteology, of Blakiston's Eagle-Owl (Bubo blakistoni) appear identical to those of Bubo (e.g. Eurasian Eagle-Owl (Bubo bubo)) and unlike Ketupa.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
semenowi Zarudny, 1905 - Southern Turkey, Israel (probably extinct) and northern Syria to north-western India.
leschenaulti (Temminck, 1820) - India (south of Himalayas) east to Myanmar (except north-east) and Thailand.
zeylonensis (Gmelin, 1788) - Sri Lanka.
orientalis Delacour, 1926 - North-eastern Myanmar to south-eastern China (Guangxi, Guangdong), south to Malay Peninsula, Indochina and Hainan I.
