Subspecies
Genus seems to be closely related to a high-Andean lineage that includes Lesbia, Metallura, Oreonympha and Oreotrochilus. Sister-species relationship with Green-backed Firecrown (Sephanoides sephaniodes) supported by recent DNA studies. In the past, phylogenetic affinities with other hummingbird species have been much disputed. In mid-19th century, pronounced sexual dimorphism caused the sexes to be classified as two different species within the same genus, until observations of mating and of the two morphotypes sharing the same nest revealed their true identities. Subspecies leyboldi of Alejandro Selkirk I (also Juan Fernandez Is) is now extinct. Originally considered a separate species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
fernandensis (King, 1831) - Robinson Crusoe I in Juan Fernández Is (off west-central Chile).
leyboldi! (Gould, 1870) - Alejandro Selkirk I (also Juan Fernández Is). Extinct.
Similar Species
Female Green-backed Firecrown (Sephanoides sephaniodes) is smaller, paler green with duskier underparts and not so densely spotted on throat, with white postocular spot.
