Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry forest, dry savanna. From sea-level - 2,600 m.

Range (Guide)
Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador (B) (NB), Guatemala (B) (NB), Honduras (B) (NB), Mexico (B) (NB), Nicaragua.

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 500,000 - 4,999,999 (2012).

Subspecies
Chlorostilbon canivetii (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Canivet's Emerald (Chlorostilbon canivetii), Golden-crowned Emerald (Chlorostilbon auriceps) and Cozumel Emerald (Chlorostilbon forficatus) following AOU (1998).

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Blue-tailed Emerald (Chlorostilbon mellisugus).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • canivetii (Lesson, 1832)   -  South-eastern Mexico to Costa Rica. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Blue-tailed Emerald (Chlorostilbon mellisugus).
  • osberti Gould, 1860   -  South-eastern Mexico (extreme south-eastern Chiapas), western and central Guatemala and El Salvador to Honduras and Nicaragua. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Blue-tailed Emerald (Chlorostilbon mellisugus).
  • salvini (Cabanis & Heine, 1860)   -  Costa Rica, in highlands of Pacific coast (except regions occupied by next race). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Blue-tailed Emerald (Chlorostilbon mellisugus).
