Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,000 - 2,600 m, occasionally up to 3,050 m.
Mexico (B) (NB).
Western and central Mexico (southern Sinaloa and south-western Durango to Guerrero and Oaxaca).

Subspecies
Chlorostilbon canivetii (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Canivet's Emerald (Chlorostilbon canivetii), Golden-crowned Emerald (Chlorostilbon auriceps) and Cozumel Emerald (Chlorostilbon forficatus) following AOU (1998).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Blue-tailed Emerald (Chlorostilbon mellisugus).
No subspecies.
