Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, moist savanna. From sea-level - 500 m.

Brazil (B), Ecuador (B), French Guiana (B), Guyana (B), Suriname (B), Venezuela (B).

South-eastern Venezuela (Bolívar) and the Guianas to north-central Brazil (lower Amazon east to Maranh�o and Piauí); eastern Ecuador (Napo Valley).

Subspecies
Normally placed in monospecific genus Avocettula, mainly due to remarkable form of bill. Other details of morphology, however, together with behaviour and nest structure, support positioning within Anthracothorax.
