Lowland and highland Atlantic forest and ecotones between this forest and grasslands (southern Misiones) and cerrado (Paraguay). From sea-level - 2,000 m.
Eastern Brazil from Bahia south to eastern Paraguay and northern Argentina.

Similar Species
Red-browed Amazon (Amazona rhodocorytha) has blue in face and lacks lilac breast. Red-spectacled Amazon (Amazona pretrei) has more extensive red on head and wings.
