The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • guatemalae (Boddaert, 1783)   -  South-eastern Mexico to north-western Honduras. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Northern Mealy Amazon (Amazona guatemalae).
  • virenticeps (Salvadori, 1891)   -  Sula Valley, Honduras, to western Panama. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Northern Mealy Amazon (Amazona guatemalae).
  • farinosa (Boddaert, 1783)   -  Eastern Panama and east, northern and western Colombia east to south-central Venezuela and the Guianas, and south through north-western and eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru and north-eastern Bolivia to Amazon basin, then on to central-eastern and south-eastern Brazil.
