Southern Brazil chiefly in Rio Grande do Sul; very rare or vagrant in Paraguay and Argentina.

Habitat destruction due to cutting for timber, building materials and fuelwood, intense grazing, and livestock trampling, trapping for the cage-bird trade, are the main threats.

Fruit, seeds and flowers.
Voice
Piercing, high-pitched screeches. A lower, hoarse 'caw caw keeu keeu' and a repeated 'hee-o hee-o hee-o'.

Subspecies
Sometimes considered conspecific with Tucuman Amazon (Amazona tucumana), but they are better regarded as forming a superspecies.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Vinaceous-breasted Amazon (Amazona vinacea) has less red on head and none at carpal joint. Pileated Parrot (Pionopsitta pileata) is much smaller with no red in wing.
