Subspecies
Loriculus amabilis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Moluccan Hanging-Parrot (Loriculus amabilis) and Sula Hanging-Parrot (Loriculus sclateri) following Collar (1997).

Forms part of the Sulawesi Hanging-Parrot (Loriculus stigmatus) superspecies. Sometimes treated as conspecific with Moluccan Hanging-Parrot (Loriculus amabilis) and Sangihe Hanging-Parrot (Loriculus catamene).

Proposed subspecies ruber from Banggai based on character present in at least some Moluccan Hanging-Parrot (Loriculus amabilis), probably age-related.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

ruber Meyer, AB & Wiglesworth, 1896 - Peleng, Banggai Is.
sclateri Wallace, 1863 - Sula Islands and Banggai Islands.
