Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Sula Hanging-Parrot (Loriculus sclateri), Moluccan Hanging-Parrot (Loriculus amabilis), Sangihe Hanging-Parrot (Loriculus catamene), Orange-fronted Hanging-Parrot (Loriculus aurantiifrons) and Bismarck Hanging-Parrot (Loriculus tener).

Proposed subspecies croconotus and quadricolor based on slight, probably individual variation.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

stigmatus (M�ller, S, 1843) - Sulawesi and adjacent islands.
croconotus Jany, 1955 - Buton and Muna (off east Sulawesi).
quadricolor Walden, 1872 - Togian Is. (off north-central Sulawesi).
