Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Sri Lanka Hanging-Parrot (Loriculus beryllinus). Birds of southern India formerly placed in subspecies rubropygialis, on basis of darker coloration and duller red rump, but these differences subsequently put down to individual variation and/or wear.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
vernalis (Sparrman, 1787) - North-eastern and south-western India to southern China, south-eastern Asia and Andaman Islands.
