Common to uncommon. Sedentary. The western subspecies, naretha, possibly uncommon.

Habitat
Highly timbered grasslands, mulga, mallee, she-oak, watercourses. Paddock trees.

Inland south-eastern Australia from northern Eyre Peninsula, SA to north-western SA, east to southern Q from Eyre Creek, west to Birdsville, north-east to Windorah - Blackall, east to Roma-Condamine-Texas in NSW, east to Warialda-Gunnedah-Wellington-Wagga Wagga-Corowa, south to inland NSW.

Food
Seeds of grasses, herbaceous plants, shrubs and trees. Also fruit, flowers, nectar and insects and their larvae.

Voice
A harsh, 'jak, jalajak' or 'chakchakchakchak' uttered in flight. Piping whistles.

Nest
In a hollow of a tree.

Eggs (Guide)
4 - 7, usually 5; white; rounded; 23 - 24 x 18 - 20 mm. Incubation: about 20 days; by female.

Young
Fledge in 4 - 5 weeks.

Subspecies
Sometimes included in Psephotus or Platycercus. Subspecies narethae may be incipient species.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • haematogaster (Gould, 1838)   -  Inland western and southern New South Wales, north-western Vic. and southern SA.
  • haematorrhoa (Gould, 1865)   -  Eastern Australia (interior southern Queensland and northern New South Wales).
  • pallescens (Salvadori, 1891)   -  Lake Eyre Basin, SA and Cooper Drainage System, extending into extreme south-western Qld and perhaps, extreme north-western New South Wales.
  • narethae (H. L. White, 1921)   -  Nullarbor Plain, south-western SA and south-eastern WA. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Naretha Bluebonnet (Northiella narethae).
