Once widespread throughout Philippines, but now possibly restricted to Palawan, San Miguel Is, Tawitawi, western Mindanao (Zamboanga), Siargao and Masbate, though also recorded recently on Mindoro, southern Luzon, Bohol and Siquijor; may also survive elsewhere, where little recent ornithological research, e.g. Leyte, Samar.

Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,700 (2010) and decreasing.
Status CR
Lowland deforestation, mangrove destruction, persecution as a crop-pest, hunting for food, trapping for cage-bird rade, are the main threats.

Loud, harsh croaking. A rasping call with two syllables.

Subspecies
Birds of Polillo supposedly larger, and have on occasion been placed in separate subspecies, mcgregori, but doubtfully valid.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Australian corellas and Solomons Corella (Cacatua ducorpsii) (not in range), lack white-tipped red undertail-coverts. Gathers on offshore islands when, at a distance, easily mistaken for Pied Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula bicolor).
