Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist shrubland, heavily degraded former forest. From sea-level - 1,500 m.

Range (Guide)
Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay (B), Venezuela.

Estimated population is 500,000 - 4,999,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Additional subspecies chochi sometimes recognized for birds of southern Brazil and northern Argentina on basis of larger size and colour of upperparts, but these populations overlap considerably in size and plumage with birds in northern Brazil and Venezuela.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • excellens (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Southern Mexico to eastern Panama.
  • naevia (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Colombia east to the Guianas, and south to western Ecuador, northern Peru and Brazil and on south to Bolivia, Paraguay and northern Argentina; Margarita I (Venezuela) and Trinidad.
