Habitat
Secondary growth forest, Hibiscus thickets and streamside vine-tangles. From sea-level - 570 m.

Range (Guide)
Costa Rica (B) (NB).

Cocos I, off Costa Rica.
 
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 250 - 999 (2010) and stable.

Status VU
Predation by feral cats and rats, overgrazing by feral deer, pigs, goats, human disturbance from eco-tourism are the main threats.

Food
Large insects, lizards.

Voice
A deep, dry 'kcha' repeated 5 - 8 times, sometimes preceded by rolling rattles. Also a guttural 'k'k'k'k'ru'hoo'.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Mangrove Cuckoo (Coccyzus minor), with which has been considered conspecific.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Yellow-billed Cuckoo (Coccyzus americanus) which has white underparts, Mangrove Cuckoo (Coccyzus minor) which has greyish wings and brown mantle, Black-billed Cuckoo (Coccyzus erythropthalmus) which has black bill and white underparts.
