Angola through southern Zaire and Zambia, by R Okavango and Caprivi Strip, eastern past Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe then north to Malawi and south-western Tanzania.

Subspecies
Has been treated as conspecific with the very similar Blue-headed Coucal (Centropus monachus). Smaller and darker birds in northern Malawi and southern Tanzania have been described as separate subspecies songweensis, but there is overlap in these traits with other populations.

songweensis Benson, 1948 - Southern Tanzania.
cupreicaudus Reichenow, 1896 - Angola to southern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Malawi.
