Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, mangroves, swamps, rural gardens. From sea-level - 1,800 m.
Comoros, Madagascar, Mayotte, Seychelles.

Subspecies
Sometimes regarded as conspecific with Black Coucal (Centropus grillii) and Lesser Coucal (Centropus bengalensis).
Extinct population of Assumption I sometimes awarded separate subspecies, assumptionis.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- toulou (Müller, 1776) - Madagascar.
- insularis Ridgway, 1894 - Aldabra. Formerly also Assumption I.
- assumptionis ! Nicoll, 1906 - Assumption I. (Seychelles). Extinct.
