Mangroves and associated swamps in the coastal lowlands, freshwater swamps and grassland scrub adjacent to brackish water swamps. Also teak forest.

Status VU
Destruction and degradation of mangroves and swamps due to widespread conversion to fishponds and agricultural land, and reclamation for urban expansion and industrialisation is the main threat.

Similar Species
Lesser Coucal (Centropus bengalensis) which is smaller, iris dark brown, duller rufous (including mantle), often streaked white. Greater Coucal (Centropus sinensis) which is larger, mantle also rufous.
