Breeding Season (Guide)

Nest
None. Egg(s) layed in domed nests, usually of Large-billed Gerygone (Gerygone magnirostris), White-throated Gerygone (Gerygone olivacea) and other gerygones.
Eggs (Guide)
1; glossy, buffy olive, minutely freckled with dark brown, more at the each end; elongated oval; 18 x 12 mm.
Young
Altricial, nidicolous.
Subspecies
BirdLife International retain Little Bronze-Cuckoo (Chalcites minutillus) (Payne, 1997) and Gould's Bronze-Cuckoo (Chrysococcyx russatus) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) as separate species contra Christidis and Boles (2008) who treat Gould's Bronze-Cuckoo (Chrysococcyx russatus) as a subspecies of Little Bronze-Cuckoo (Chalcites minutillus).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- russatus Gould, 1868 - North-eastern Qld from Cape York to Bowen. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Little Bronze-Cuckoo (Chalcites minutillus).
- aheneus (Junge, 1938) - Eastern and northern Borneo, southern Sulu Archipelago and southern Philippines, Sulawesi, Madu and Flores. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Little Bronze-Cuckoo (Chalcites minutillus).
- jungei (Stresemann, 1938) - Sulawesi, Madu and Flores. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Little Bronze-Cuckoo (Chalcites minutillus).
- misoriensis (Salvadori, 1875) - Lowlands of New Guinea and associated offshore islands. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Little Bronze-Cuckoo (Chalcites minutillus).
Similar Species
Little Bronze-Cuckoo (Chalcites minutillus) which has greenish upperparts.
