Subspecies
Often placed in genus Hierococcyx, along with other hawk-cuckoos, on grounds of notable morphological differences from Cuculus.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- varius (Vahl, 1797) - India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar.

- ciceliae Phillips, WWA, 1949 - Sri Lanka.
