Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, heavily degraded former forest, dry savanna, inland wetlands, plantations.
Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Togo, Uganda.

Subspecies
Formerly sometimes joined with Blue-headed Bee-eater (Merops muelleri) in genus Meropiscus. Has been placed with other small, round-winged species lacking tail-streamers in genus Mellitophagus, comprising present species and Blue-headed Bee-eater (Merops muelleri), Little Bee-eater (Merops pusillus), Blue-breasted Bee-eater (Merops variegatus), Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater (Merops oreobates), Red-throated Bee-eater (Merops bulocki) and White-fronted Bee-eater (Merops bullockoides). Subspecies intergrade in south-eastern Nigeria.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- gularis Shaw, 1798 - Sierra Leone, south-eastern Guinea and southern Mali east to south-eastern Nigeria.
- australis (Reichenow, 1885) - South-eastern Nigeria or western Cameroon through Congo Basin to western Uganda and northern Angola.
