North-central Peru east of Andes: known only from isolated low plateau Nwest of Contamana, between R Huallaga and R Ucayali.

Estimated population is 250 - 999 (2010).
Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through deforestation is the main threat.

Subspecies
No very close relatives apparent. Possibly closest to Five-colored Barbet (Capito quinticolor), White-mantled Barbet (Capito hypoleucus) or Black-spotted Barbet (Capito niger), but further research required.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- wallacei O'Neill, Lane, Kratter, Capparella et al., 2000 - North-central Peru.
- fitzpatricki Seeholzer et al., 2012 - Central Peru. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sira Barbet (Capito fitzpatricki).
