Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with Orange-fronted Barbet (Capito squamatus), but, although sharing some plumage patterns, probably not very closely related and the two are separated geographically by divergent Five-colored Barbet (Capito quinticolor). Forms described as subspecies pirrensis from southern Panama and north-western Colombia and melas from Caribbean eastern Panama now considered indistinguishable from rubrilateralis.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
maculicoronatus Lawrence, 1861 - Western Panama (Veraguas) east to Canal Zone.
rubrilateralis Chapman, 1912 - Eastern Panama to north-western Colombia (east to Antioquia and south to Valle).
