Subspecies
Relationship with Bearded Barbet (Pogonornis dubius) and Black-breasted Barbet (Pogonornis rolleti) indicated by plumage pattern and by sexual dimorphism in flank pattern. Related also, but less closely, to Black-backed Barbet (Lybius minor) and Brown-breasted Barbet (Pogonornis melanopterus). Subspecies only slightly differentiated.

Proposed subspecies friedmanni from southern Cameroon to Cabinda (northern Angola) and aethiops from Ethiopia now included within aequatorialis.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

bidentatus (Shaw, 1798) - Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia east to central Cameroon.
aequatorialis (Shelley, 1889) - Eastern Cameroon east to central Ethiopia, south to north-western Angola, northern Zaire, Burundi and north-western Tanzania.
