Subtropical and tropical dry forest, dry savanna. From sea-level - 1,500 m.

Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Togo.

Subspecies
Not very closely related to congeners, probably closest to the group comprising White-headed Barbet (Lybius leucocephalus), Zambian Barbet (Lybius chaplini) and Red-faced Barbet (Lybius rubrifacies). Subspecies ill-defined, with some mosaic variation, and clinal variation in colour intensity.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • buchanani Hartert, 1924   -  Southern Mauritania and Mali east to southern Chad, and south to southern Sahel region (east to north-central Nigeria).
  • rubescens (Temminck, 1823)   -  Sahel fringe from Gambia and Sierra Leone east to central Nigeria, northern Cameroon, Central African Republic and north-central Zaire, reaching coast from Ivory Coast to Nigeria.
  • vieilloti (Leach, 1815)   -  Central Sudan and north-western Ethiopia south to north-eastern Zaire, southern Sudan and western Ethiopia.
