Subspecies
Closely related to Black-throated Barbet (Tricholaema melanocephala), but they are considered not close enough to form a superspecies. Apparently quite closely affiliated also with the superspecies that includes Red-fronted Barbet (Tricholaema diademata), Miombo Pied Barbet (Tricholaema frontata) and Acacia Pied Barbet (Tricholaema leucomelas). Species name sometimes misspelt as lachrymosa. Subspecies only weakly differentiated.
Proposed subspecies narokensis, from Doinyo Narok (Kenya), included within nominate. Birds from east-central Tanzania, described as subspecies ruahae, now considered inseparable from radcliffei.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
lacrymosa Cabanis, 1878 - North-eastern Zaire to southern Sudan and central Kenya, and south to central Uganda and north-eastern Tanzania.
radcliffei Ogilvie-Grant, 1904 - Eastern Zaire and southern Uganda to west-central Kenya, south to Burundi, north-eastern Zambia and south-western Tanzania.
