Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 1,525 m.
Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania [United Republic of].
South-eastern Kenya (southern from Arabuko-Sokoke Forest) to north-eastern Tanzania, and southern disjunctly to south-eastern Malawi and southern Mozambique (Sul do Save); also Zanzibar.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Moustached Green Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus leucomystax) and Western Green Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus coryphaea), all having in past been placed in separate genus Viridibucco. Birds of southern Malawi and Mozambique sometimes separated as subspecies hylodytes.
