Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Anchieta's Barbet (Stactolaema anchietae).
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
whytii (Shelley, 1893) - South-central Tanzania to Mozambique and south-eastern Malawi.
stresemanni (Grote, 1934) - South-western corner of Tanzania and adjacent north-eastern Zambia.
terminata (Clancey, 1956) - Highlands around Iringa, in southern Tanzania.
angoniensis (Benson, 1964) - Eastern Zambia to south-western Malawi.
sowerbyi Sharpe, 1898 - Eastern Zimbabwe to extreme southern Malawi. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sowerby's Barbet (Stactolaema sowerbyi).
buttoni (White, CMN, 1945) - North-central Zambia; almost certainly also extreme southern Zaire.
