Primary and secondary lowland dipterocarp, peatswamp and kerangas to hill forest, mangroves. From sea-level - 1,500 m.

Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore (E), Thailand.

Habits
Gregarious, usually in vocal groups of 6 - 8.

Food
Fruits and insects.

Voice
A thin, sibilant, rather soft but high-pitched 'tseet tseet tseet...', each note repetaed irregularly.

Nest
In a hole excavated in a bees' nests, arboreal termite nests, rotten trees and at the base of a large fern.

Subspecies
Relationships unclear, and species remains very poorly known. Subspecies detersus possibly inseparable from hayii.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

detersus Deignan, 1960 - Southern Myanmar (extreme southern Tenasserim) and adjacent peninsular Thailand (south to Trang).
hayii (J. E. Gray, 1831) - Malay Peninsula and Sumatra.
tertius Chasen & Kloss, 1929 - Northern Borneo.
fuliginosus (Temminck, 1830) - Borneo (except north).
