Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 900 m., occasionally to 1,035 m.
Cambodia, China (mainland), Laos (B), Thailand, Vietnam.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2020) and decreasing.

Subspecies
May be related, but not very closely, to Brown-headed Barbet (Psilopogon zeylanicus) and Lineated Barbet (Psilopogon lineatus), also to White-cheeked Barbet (Psilopogon viridis), or possibly to Golden-throated Barbet (Psilopogon franklinii) and Black-browed Barbet (Psilopogon oorti). Species name sometimes spelt erroneously as faiostriata.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- praetermissus (Kloss, 1918) - Northern Thailand, Laos, northern Vietnam and southern and south-eastern China (south of Canton).
- faiostrictus (Temminck, 1832) - Central and southern Thailand, Cambodia and southern Vietnam.
