Subspecies
Usually considered a separate species or conspecific with Sumba Buttonquail (Turnix everetti). Both taxa recently proposed as subspecies of Red-chested Button-quail (Turnix pyrrhothorax) distinguished from latter by plumage and size.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Larger male Spotted Buttonquail (Turnix ocellatus) has rufous breast but lacks rufous flanks and undertail coverts.
