Palearctic, mostly between 42° northern and 65° north.

Nest
A depresssion in the ground among grass or herbage, lined with grass and down, near water.

Eggs (Guide)
8 - 14, usually 8 - 9; smooth, glossy, light brown or cream, often becoming stained; ellipsoidal. Incubation: about 22 days; by male.

Subspecies
Sometimes placed in monospecific genus Querquedula.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Female Grey Teal (Anas gracilis) which lacks facial strips and non-breeding with female Pacific Black Duck (Anas superciliosa) which is somewhat larger and has a dark or black crown.
