Subspecies
Known to have hybridized, very rarely, with Spruce Grouse (Falcipennis canadensis).

The following 15 subspecies are recognised:

  • yukonensis Grinnell, 1916   -  Western Alsaka and central Yukon to northern Alberta and north-western Saskatchewan.
  • umbelloides (Douglas, 1829)   -  Northern British Columbia through central Alberta, central Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario to Quebec.
  • labradorensis Ouellet, 1991   -  Labrador Peninsula.
  • sabini (Douglas, 1829)   -  Pacific coast from south-western British Columbia to north-western California.
  • brunnescens Conover, 1935   -  Vancouver I.
  • castanea Aldrich & Friedmann, 1943   -  Olympic Peninsula.
  • affinis Aldrich and Friedmann, 1943   -  Inland British Columbia south to central Oregon.
  • phaios Aldrich and Friedmann, 1943   -  South-eastern British Columbia to eastern Oregon and south-central Idaho.
  • incana Aldrich & Friedmann, 1943   -  South-eastern Idaho and western Wyoming south to central Utah.
  • mediana Todd, 1940   -  Minnesota and southern Wisconsin.
  • togata (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Southern Ontario and southern Quebec south to northern Wisconsin, central Michigan and central New York.
  • thayeri Bangs, 1912   -  Nova Scotia.
  • umbellus (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Central New York and central Massachusetts south to eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
  • monticola Todd, 1940   -  Southern Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania, through Appalachian Mts to northern Georgia.
  • obscura Todd, 1947   -  Northern Ontario (Canada).
