Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Western Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus), with which frequently hybridizes in the limited areas of overlap in basin of R Yenisey. Birds from various parts of Siberia formerly awarded subspecies turensis, janensis and kolymensis, and those from Transbaikalia macrurus.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
parvirostris Bonaparte, 1856 - Eastern Siberia, from lower R Yenisey to the upper R Anadyr, south to Transbaikalia, Manchuria, Ussuriland and Sikhote Alin Mts; Sakhalin I.
