Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Black-billed Capercaillie (Tetrao urogalloides), with which very commonly hybridizes where ranges overlap in Siberia (up to 12% of males reported to be hybrids in one area).

Hybrids also common with Black Grouse (Lyrurus tetrix) and occasional with Willow Grouse (Lagopus lagopus). Many of proposed subspecies clearly intergrade, and sometimes reduced essentially to two, with nominate in northern and taczanowskii in south, but this option probably oversimplistic.

The following 14 subspecies are recognised:

  • cantabricus Castroviejo, 1967   -  Cantabrian Mts (north-western Spain).
  • aquitanicus Ingram, C, 1915   -  Pyrenees.
  • major C. L. Brehm, 1831   -  Central Europe, from Germany and Alps to south-western Baltic states, western Byelorussia, eastern Carpathians and northern Macedonia.
  • rudolfi Dombrowski, 1912   -  Carpathians in Ukraine and Romania, and Rhodope Mts in Bulgaria.
  • urogallus Linnaeus, 1758   -  Scandinavia; Scotland (where reintroduced).
  • lonnbergi Snigirevski, 1957   -  Kola Peninsula.
  • karelicus Lönnberg, 1924   -  Finland and Russian Karelia.
  • pleskei Stegmann, 1926   -  Byelorussia, northern Ukraine and most of European Russia.
  • obsoletus Snigirevski, 1937   -  From L Onega through northern Russia and northern Siberia to upper R Lena.
  • volgensis Buturlin, 1907   -  Central and south-eastern Russia.
  • uralensis Nazarov, 1886   -  Southern Urals and south-western Siberia east to Barnaul.
  • taczanowskii (Stejneger, 1885)   -  Central Siberia, south to Altai Mts and north-western Mongolia.
