(Hodgson, 1838)

Habitat
Coniferous and mixed forests near the treeline, plus subalpine birch and rhododendron scrub. From 3,000 - 4,300 m.

China (mainland) (B) (NB).

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 50,000 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Hunting for food and habitat loss through deforestation are the main threats.

Subspecies
Subspecies harmani sometimes considered a distinct species. Intergrades among subspecies reported, suggesting that several may be of dubious validity.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • harmani (Hodgson, 1838)   -  Tibet. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Tibetan Eared-pheasant (Crossoptilon harmani).
  • drouynii Verreaux, J, 1868   -  Probably eastern Tibet.
  • dolani Meyer de Schauensee, 1937   -  West-central China (southern Qinghai).
  • crossoptilon (Hodgson, 1838)   -  West-central China (western Sichuan), south-eastern Tibet and extreme north-eastern India.
  • lichiangense Delacour, 1945   -  South-central China (north-western Yunnan).
