Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, high altitude shrubland. From 1,550 - 3,700 m.

Range (Guide)

Burundi, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Rwanda, Uganda.

South-western Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi to mountains of eastern Zaire.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Jackson's Francolin (Pternistis jacksoni), Erckel's Francolin (Pternistis erckelii), Djibouti Francolin (Pternistis ochropectus) and Chestnut-naped Francolin (Pternistis castaneicollis). Birds of Ruwenzori Mts have been ascribed to subspecies chapini, but this subspecies not generally accepted.
