Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Jackson's Francolin (Pternistis jacksoni), Handsome Francolin (Pternistis nobilis), Erckel's Francolin (Pternistis erckelii) and Djibouti Francolin (Pternistis ochropectus). Several other subspecies have been described, but validity doubtful: bottegi, ogoensis, kaffanus, and gofanus all included in nominate castaneicollis. Subspecies atrifrons has been considered to be specifically distinct.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

castaneicollis Salvadori, 1888 - Ethiopia and Somalia.
atrifrons Conover, 1930 - Southern Ethiopia and extreme northern Kenya. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Black-fronted Francolin (Pternistis atrifrons).
ogoensis (Mackworth-Praed, 1920) - Northern Somalia.
kaffanus (Grant, CHB & Mackworth-Praed, 1934) - South-western Ethiopia.
