Seeds, berries and termites. Also figs.
Voice
A rattling 'erk erk erk-kkkkkkk', with latter part descending, ending a chuckled gurgle.

Nest
A shallow grass-lined depression on an inaccessible mountain ledge.
Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Jackson's Francolin (Pternistis jacksoni), Handsome Francolin (Pternistis nobilis), Chestnut-naped Francolin (Pternistis castaneicollis) and Erckel's Francolin (Pternistis erckelii). Considered a weakly differentiated species, intermediate geographically and morphologically between Erckel's Francolin (Pternistis erckelii) and Chestnut-naped Francolin (Pternistis castaneicollis).
