Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry and moist shrubland, dry forest, dry savanna.

Range (Guide)

Angola, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Southern Angola south through Namibia to extreme northern South Africa; southern Zambia, western Zimbabwe, Botswana. Probably introduced successfully to Hawaii.

Subspecies
Has been included in genus Notocolinus. Recently proposed reorganization of Francolinus places present species in genus Pternistis with 23 other species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

adspersus (Waterhouse, 1838) - Southern Angola to Namibia, Botswana, south-western Zambia and western Zimbabwe.
mesicus Clancey, 1996 - North-central Namibia to north-western Zimbabwe and south-western Zambia.
