North-eastern Zaire (area bordered by R Aruwimi, R Nepoko and R Semliki) and western and south-central Uganda (forests of Budongo, Bugoma and Mabira).

Subspecies
Formerly placed in monotypic genus Acentrortyx. Recently proposed reorganization of Francolinus places present species in genus Pternistis with 23 other species.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Forest Francolin (Peliperdix lathami) which has a black throat and yellow legs, lacks red skin around eye.
