Subspecies
Forms superspecies with White-throated Francolin (Peliperdix albogularis) and Schlegel's Francolin (Peliperdix schlegelii). Schlegel's Francolin (Peliperdix schlegelii) has been considered a subspecies of present species. Recently proposed reorganization of Francolinus places present species in genus Peliperdix with White-throated Francolin (Peliperdix albogularis), Schlegel's Francolin (Peliperdix schlegelii), Forest Francolin (Peliperdix lathami) and Crested Francolin (Dendroperdix sephaena). Many other subspecies have been described, but are currently considered doubtfully valid: buckleyi included in spinetorum; thikae in maharao; and campbelli, vernayi, hoeschianus, angolensis, kasaicus and ruandae in nominate coqui.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
spinetorum (Bates, 1928) - Western Africa.
maharao (Sclater, WL, 1927) - Ethiopia, Kenya and northern Tanzania.
hubbardi (Ogilvie-Grant, 1895) - Western and southern Kenya south to Mwanza Province, Tanzania, and east to Kitui.
coqui (Smith, 1836) - North-western Uganda south through Zaire and central Tanzania to central South Africa.
