Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 300 m.
Brazil (E) (B).
North-eastern Brazilian coast, in recent decades only in Alagoas; formerly also in eastern Pernambuco; report of occurrence in northern Bahia seems to be unreliable. Probably now extinct, or virtually so, in the wild.

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Status EW
No wild birds exist, the last being recorded in 1987 or 1988. Habitat destruction and hunting were the main causes of its extinction. A captive population, initially established in Rio de Janeiro, numbered 44 in 2000.

Subspecies
Mentioned by Marcgraf in 1648, its true existence was questioned for a long time until its rediscovery in 1951.
All members of genus form superspecies. Often considered conspecific with Razor-billed Curassow (Mitu tuberosum).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Razor-billed Curassow (Mitu tuberosum) whose bill is not as massive and is two-toned.
