Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Bearded Guan (Penelope barbata), with which often considered conspecific.
Subspecies colombiana has been considered separate species. Subspecies albicauda sometimes merged with nominate. Birds from western Venezuela and northern Colombia, and from northern Venezuela, sometimes awarded separate subspecies, respectively mesaeus and olivaceiceps, but differences generally reckoned too slight to merit acceptance.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
albicauda Phelps & Gilliard, 1940 - Sierra de Perijá, in Colombia and Venezuela.
colombiana Todd, 1912 - Santa Marta Mts, northern Colombia.
argyrotis (Bonaparte, 1856) - Northern Colombia and northern and western Venezuela.
