Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Little Chachalaca (Ortalis motmot) and Buff-browed Chachalaca (Ortalis superciliaris), and probably also with White-bellied Chachalaca (Ortalis leucogastra). Has been considered conspecific with first two. Subspecies araucuan, squamata, columbiana and guttata (incorporating subaffinis) may merit treatment as four separate species.
Population of northern Colombia has been awarded subspecies caucae, but probably synonymous with columbiana; birds of south-eastern Mato Grosso have been ascribed subspecies remota, but apparently very similar or identical to squamata.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
columbiana (Spix, 1825) - Northern and central Colombia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Colombian Chachalaca (Ortalis columbiana).
guttata (Spix, 1825) - Eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, northern Bolivia and western Brazil.
subaffinis Todd, 1932 - Eastern and north-eastern Bolivia and adjacent Brazil.
araucuan (Spix, 1825) - Eastern Brazil. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, East Brazilian Chachalaca (Ortalis araucuan).
squamata Lesson, 1829 - South-eastern Brazil. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Scaled Chachalaca (Ortalis squamata).
remota Pinto, 1960 - South-eastern Brazil (eastern Mato Grosso do Sul and northern São Paulo).
